Easy Exercises To Do At Home That Can Help You Look and Feel Better

With so many busy people, there are not enough hours in the day for working out. Sometimes a person’s schedule is just too packed and exercise time is left by the wayside. But why is it so important to be physically active? When you aren’t as physically fit as you may be used to being, your body becomes weak, and detrimental signs and symptoms begin showing up. Here are some easy exercises to do at home that can help you look and feel better.

Just because you don't have a gym membership or tons of workout equipment at home doesn't mean you can't get fit. Simple exercises that use your body weight and everyday household items can help you feel stronger, more flexible and more confident.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

Warm up before doing any exercise. Warming up beforehand reduces your risk of injuries by loosening up your muscles and joints and preparing your heart for the added exertion. Try walking in place, marching or jogging on the spot, arm circles, knee lifts or side bends to warm up before doing these exercises.

Do the exercises slowly and precisely with proper form. Don't swing your body or jerk as you move — use slow, controlled movements while focusing on tightening your muscles and taking deep breaths.

Start with three sets of 10 repetitions each (30 reps) of each exercise. You can add more reps or do more sets as you get stronger.

Vary your routine so it doesn't get boring: Do different exercises on different days to keep things interesting, challenge your body in new ways and avoid overuse injuries.

There are a lot of ways to get in better shape, but the best way is to simply move more. That said, there are some exercises that work muscles that don't get much attention during daily life. These muscle groups are important for posture and balance, so here's a list of the best home workouts for these neglected areas.

Arm Circles

Stand with your feet about hip-width apart, hands at your sides with your palms facing outward.

Start very slowly moving your arms forward in small circles. Do 10 circles and then reverse direction for another 10 circles. Repeat three times.

Chest Stretch

Stand with your feet about hip-width apart and lean forward slightly with your knees slightly bent. Bend your arms at the elbows and bring them up behind you so your fingers touch each other between your shoulder blades. Gently push your elbows together as you take five deep breaths.

Shoulder Stretch

Stand with your feet about hip-width apart and raise one arm across your chest so it's parallel to the ground. Use the other hand to firmly pull that elbow toward the opposite shoulder until you feel a stretch across the top of your back and shoulder blade. Hold for 20 seconds, release, then repeat on the opposite side. Repeat five times on each side.

While there are exercises that require special equipment, and others that need you to leave the house, there are still a lot of easy exercises to do at home.

"When people say they don't have time to exercise, what they mean is that they don't have time to get ready and drive somewhere," says Michelle Segar, PhD, MPH, motivation scientist and associate director for sport, health and activity research and policy for the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. "At-home exercise eliminates those excuses."

But even if you're not pressed for time or lack transportation, exercising at home can be easier on your wallet or schedule than heading to a gym. And it's certainly more convenient than trekking back and forth between home and a health club several times a week.

Consider these at-home exercises for an effective way to get more physical activity and improve your overall fitness. If you don't always have time to make it to the gym or if traveling is difficult, consider exercising when you're at home. After all, if you don't use it, you'll lose it!
